Why I am here, for the long-haul.2/12/2018 In this post, I’m going to attempt to explain why Thinking People Consulting is so dear to my heart. To do that, I want to give some broader context about me. I have had a phenomenal career, worked for some top companies and have a professional network that is bigger than I could ever have imagined. At some point in my career, I went from “wishing” I could talk to the executive team, to being embraced by it. I believe that happened the moment I truly understood that the executive team is made up of people just like me. I was in a meeting once with a well-known executive from Microsoft who told me he started every day by drinking a glass of milk. It’s a comment that has stayed with me for over ten years now. It is a reminder to me that no matter your title, you’re a person. “Once the connection is built, then your intelligence can be seen” is something I regularly remind myself of. If I’d wanted a full-time, executive-level career, I could have had it. In fact, it’s been offered to me and I have declined. At the time, some friends and family were skeptical about my choice. It was an impressive title and a lot of money, working for a very large company. I still have a printout of the offer in my bedroom closet. Sometimes I look at it just as a reminder that I could have it. It’s an affirmation I use when I am doubting myself.
Along with the executive offer, I have three emails in my inbox with other job opportunities currently available, if I am interested. I point this out to show two things: · I am considered smart and capable. · I wholeheartedly believe in the business I am creating to the point that I am willing to say no to very promising full-time employment opportunities. The reason for my strong network and great job opportunities is that I am 100% confident about what I do and do not want to do. I know my strengths, I try to manage my weaknesses (rather than ignoring them) and I am following my passion. It has taken me a long time to reach this point in my career. Several years ago, things turned quickly in a positive direction. Every step I’d taken finally made sense, and I was able to identify what I truly love to do. When I started communicating that to others, the doors for career opportunities flew open. Did I mention I also have an extremely strong network? That is the secret sauce – knowing what you love and building strong relationships. Fast forward to the present. I want to take the knowledge that has literally taken me two decades to accumulate and share that knowledge with others. I want to help professionals identify their strengths, leverage their talents and excel in an environment that works for them. I want to help organizations identify their talent and create a structure that aligns the people-side of their business with their operational goals. I know that many, many people can do this and want to do this job. Yet, I also know that often, people in organizations don’t have the time. It isn’t from a lack of desire, it is often because the demands of the business goals end up inadvertently taking priority over the people needs. As a consultant who understands the people-side and the operations-side of the business, I can be a tool for you to get things done, faster. Not because you can’t do it but because you don’t always have the time to do it. I am confident I can make a significant impact on both people and organizations. It has never been about the money or title for me. It’s been about finding my purpose and helping others. Thinking People Consulting is here to help you. It will truly be my honor to be of support to you. I’m here for the long-haul. I’m building a way to help professionals and organizations – work that is very dear to my heart.
